Is Quiet Quitting The New Norm?

Updated: Jan 25, 2023

There has been a lot of buzz online and in workplaces, about the term ‘quiet quitting’. Personally, it has been taking over all my social media accounts; TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, you name it, and I will see it.

What is Quiet Quitting?

Okay, but what exactly is quiet quitting? Popularized by Tik Tok user zaidleppelin, he defines the term as ‘not outright quitting your job, just quitting the idea of going above and beyond at work’.

Also defined by Investopedia, ‘quiet quitting’ refers to doing the minimum requirements of a job and putting in no extra time, effort, or enthusiasm than necessary.

Netizens are divided over the term and what it really stands for. Some people agree and relate with the term, saying they are quiet quitting themselves. Whereas others are against the negative connotation behind the word “quitting”, despite still fulfilling work requirements.

Personally, I think quiet quitting does not necessarily have to be a bad thing. Quiet quitting can be positive if it is regarding creating a healthy work-life balance. But quiet quitting can be negative, if the reasons for doing so are also negative.

Are you quiet quitting?

Here are some ways to spot if you could be quiet quitting. (Based on my observations, experience, and research. Always the best for you guys!)

Positive changes:

  1. You stopped taking up extra projects beyond what was tasked

  2. You have started setting clear boundaries between work and personal life

  3. You have been clocking in and out on time (not coming in way earlier, or leaving much later, any more)

Negative changes:

  1. You feel disengaged or unmotivated at work

  2. You feel like your work is not appreciated

  3. You stopped caring about work as much

If you see more positive changes in yourself in your workplace, it could be an indicator that you are learning to set boundaries. You are probably taking a step back to realize that your mental health should come first. It is okay to not exert yourself like you used to, because you are still doing your job!

If you see more negative changes though, it could be a sign to re-evaluate your job. You might want to reconsider if your job is really suited for you; Especially if you are struggling to find value in you what you do, or feel that your workplace is not as accommodating as it used to be. According to Collato, these are some reasons why you could be quiet quitting at work.

Is quiet quitting the new norm?

According to Forbes, 50% of the US workforce is quiet quitting, which seemingly is a lot.

But it is not necessarily a bad thing. Hustle culture has been trending the past few years, and perhaps, people are realizing that it is not very sustainable. Maybe this change, is what the world needs.

Ultimately, you always want to balance your priorities properly; be it work, school or your personal life. Do what feels right to you!
